Class Five: Year 4/5

Welcome to our class page

Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. The time seems to have gone so quickly! The children have made a really positive start to their time in Class 5 and have all come back ready to learn!

As part of the children’s learning this term the following curriculum topics will be covered:

In literacy the children will look at historical stories, recounts, instructions, poetry and non-chronological reports. Many of these units we will be linking to our Tudor topic and then to our science work on animals and Human development. Our literacy lessons we will also look at grammar and spelling strategies.

The children will be given weekly spellings on a Monday to be tested on a Friday. I would be grateful if you would assist your child in learning these. The children’s reading books will be checked, and if necessary changed, on a daily basis. Please sign your child’s reading record when they have read at home or have finished a book.

Numeracy will develop work on place value, as well as practice and develop the children’s four operation skills both in written and mental form. Data handling, time, shape, space and measures will also be covered, including problem solving incorporating these concepts. We will be practising our times tables on a regular basis, going up to x12 and the children should learn these alongside their corresponding division facts. Each week the children will be tested on their mental maths skills.

In Science we are looking at rocks and then animals and Human development. This will involve the children in class, groups and individual investigations which will provide them with many new ideas and skills. In geography we will look at land use/ settlements.

In R.E we are studying creation linked to the natural world. Christmas will be our focus after the half term. In music the children will explore rhythmic patterns and then composing linked to Carnival of the Animals.

We will be having two P.E sessions per week, on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. For these sessions the children will need a suitable indoor and outdoor kit (consisting of dark coloured/ red shorts or trousers, white/ red plain t-shirt, jumper, plimsolls and/ or trainers). This should be in school on a Monday and stay until Friday as sometimes PE sessions may change day. Please ensure that kits are in a bag that can be hung on their peg and are labelled. Children will not be able to participate in PE sessions if a complete kit is unavailable. No jewellery should be worn in school- this includes stud earrings for health and safety. Watches need to be removed for PE sessions.

In PSHE this term we will look initially at safety. After half term the focus will be on personal development (emotions and health).  For our ICT topic we will be looking at e-safety, multi-media, technology in our lives and programming.

In Art this half term we are looking at portraits linked to our Tudor topic. In D&T after the half term break we will be creating biscuits and packaging.

Finally homework will be given out on a Friday night each week. This will usually consist of two activities both of which will link with work being carried out in class. Homework should be back into school on a Monday. We appreciate your support in ensuring that these tasks are carried out to further the children’s learning.

We look forward to a happy and productive time ahead. Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries or concerns.

Yours sincerely

Mrs E. Kay/ Mrs E. Hall
