Overview
Our Curriculum carefully uses the National Curriculum and EYFS framework to ensure all children leave or school with the knowledge and skills intended to live a successful life. With Christian values at the heart, our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our pupils academically, socially, spiritually and emotionally. We want our pupils to leave this school as confident, compassionate, and aspirational young people who will make a positive difference to the future world.

Curriculum Intent
Our Curriculum has been designed to ensure each and every child who leaves our school

Our Christian vision wants children to shine in many ways and at KGB School we want art to inspire and challenge pupils to think, explore and create. They will develop skills to convey themselves through a range of media and have a deep knowledge and love of art, craft and design, appreciating how history and culture have been influenced by creative thinkers.
British Values
At Kirkby and Great Broughton School we uphold and teach pupils about British Values, which are defined as:
- Democracy
- Rule of law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
These values are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education(PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
The school takes opportunities to actively promote British Values through collective worship and whole school systems and structures such as electing our house captains and members of our school council. We also actively promote British Values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery include real opportunities for exploring these values.
Promoting British Values
British Values are encapsulated within our mission statement, Christian values and through school’s ethos and curriculum.
Activities that support and promote British values include celebrating British events such as The Diamond Jubilee, Royal Weddings, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and Remembrance Celebrations.
Democracy
Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard:
- Encouraging pupils to express their views;
- School council – elected members bring forward views from children in their year group;
- Electing House Captains;
- Questionnaires and suggestions boxes in which they are able to put forward their views about the school;
- Playground buddies.
The rule of Law
- School Rules which are clear and fair and are reinforced throughout the school day by everyone, wherever they are in school. Our School Rules are re- written every year in September with input from the elected School Council.
- School Behaviour policy.
- Helping children to distinguish right from wrong.
- School assembly themes and visitors to assemblies
- Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsivities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
- Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message – Crucial crew for Y5/6 pupils.
- Good behaviour, attitude and work is encouraged – we have devised a reward system which is consistently followed throughout the school.
- We are committed to praising children’s efforts at all times. We endeavour to praise the children informally, individually, during group work, in front of the whole class and the whole school.
- Children are rewarded not only for the achievement in curriculum areas, but for behaviour and for living out our Christian values.
- Children’s achievements are recognised and celebrated during celebration worship every Friday.
- We teach children aspects of both civil and criminal law and discuss how this might differ from some religious laws.

- Support children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence through a broad and balanced curriculum.
- Children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.
- We encourage children to take responsibility for their behaviour, as well as knowing their rights.
- As a school we educate and provide boundaries for children to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through E-safety.
- Whether it is through choice of a learning challenge or activity of participation in our extra-curriculum clubs and opportunities, pupils are given freedom to make choices as and when appropriate.
- We challenge stereotypes and encourage the children to stand up to injustice.
- We implement a strong anti-bullying culture.
Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is at the heart of our ethos and core values and based around Christian Values such as ‘respect’ and ‘responsibility’. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and it is actively promoted by all staff. We also implement a wider curriculum, including:
- Promoting respect for individual differences;
- Challenging prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour;
- Strong links with the wider community e.g. our local church, Stokesley lunch club and the Children’s Society.
Understanding of those of different faiths and beliefs
Kirkby and Great Broughton is situated in an area which is not greatly culturally diverse; therefore we place great empathies on promoting diversity with the children in the following ways:
- School assemblies;
- RE Curriculum;
- PSHE Curriculum;
- Music Curriculum;
- Visits to places of worship;
- Discussing differences between people such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality and difference of family situations, such as looked-after children or young carers.

Computing
At Kirkby and Great Broughton School, we plan our computing curriculum to allow pupils to shine now and in the future world.
As well as ensuring that the children have covered the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum, the content allows for a broad, deep understanding of computing and how it links to children’s lives.
Computing allows children to develop analytical problem-solving skills and become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information technology. We want children to know more, remember more and understand more in computing so that they leave primary school computer literate. Computing skills are a major factor in enabling children to be confident, creative and independent learners and it is our intention that children have every opportunity available to allow them to achieve this.
Our curriculum intends to prepare pupils to live safely and shine in an increasingly digital British society where pupils can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. It encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team.
At KGB we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Wherever possible, we aim to link work to other subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art to help children make connections, aid their retention and support their learning.
English
At Kirkby and Great Broughton School, English is Engaging, Connected, Challenging and Self-fulfilling as per our whole curriculum intent. Literacy-rich, it immerses children in high-quality texts. We want children to develop into confident, life-long lovers readers and writers to allow them to shine out to the world in their future.
We want all of our children to make excellent progress: to know more, remember more and do more. We provide learning opportunities that will widen, deepen and build on prior knowledge across all curriculum areas, fostering curiosity, aspirations and a passion for learning.
We teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.
As children get older, we use a ‘Reading into Writing’ approach, which immerses children in high quality texts which they can then use to support their writing.

Early Reading and Phonics
At Kirkby and Great Broughton CE VA Primary School, we believe it is essential that our approach to teaching phonics and reading is accessible to all learners, regardless of background and we want all children to shine as readers.
We believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. This is why we teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Progression which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. As a result, all our children are able to tackle any unfamiliar words as they read. At Kirkby and Great Broughton School, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects.

One of the most important things you can do to help, as well as reading with your child, is using the correct letter sounds when blending words. These videos show you how we teach the pronunciation of sounds.

At KGB we want our pupils to leave this school as confident, compassionate and aspirational young people who will make a positive difference and contribution to their future world. Through our geography curriculum we want to inspire in our children a curiosity and fascination for the world and its population. Our curriculum will equip pupils with the geographical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s diverse world. Investigative and informative topic themes we will give our pupils knowledge about the world’s natural and human environments, its diverse places, people and communities, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of the Earth’s key physical and human processes and resources.

At KGB our curriculum intent states: we want our pupils to leave this school as confident, compassionate and aspirational young people who will make a positive difference to the future world. Through our history curriculum we want our children become inquisitive historians, to question the world around us now and in the past. We want our children to be curious and develop an appreciation of the past, of how our lives have been shaped by what went before. Through our topic themes we intend to provide interesting and exciting historical experiences which will promote historical thinking, encouraging our children to ask questions, weigh evidence, scrutinise arguments and develop their own judgement of historical periods. Through connecting the past to the present, we will prepare our children for their place in the future.

At Kirkby and Great Broughton school we aim to provide a high-quality mathematics curriculum that is challenging, enjoyable, creative and engaging for all pupils and allows them to reach their full potential. We want to ensure that pupils are confident mathematicians who are encouraged to persevere and take risks and to become independent learners so that children have enquiring minds and the skills to question, debate and back up their thoughts with secure mathematical understanding.
Sessions will include explicit reference to vital mathematical vocabulary and we promote all children to communicate their ideas with mathematical precision and clarity. We will provide a variety of mathematical opportunities across the curriculum so that pupils can apply skills to different contexts and recognise the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
Mathematics is a high priority across our school and therefore it is taught to children on a daily basis through whole class, small group and / or individual tasks (depending on the age and needs of the children). We follow the White Rose Scheme of Learning which is a blocked scheme allowing for depth and breadth of learning within each strand of mathematics.
Our mathematical approach is based on a concrete, pictorial and abstract learning model which encourages children to engage with a wide and varied range of concrete manipulatives, pictorial representations and abstract methodologies within and across sessions. This means that learning is meaningful and progressive for children, allowing them to see the steps required and then take this knowledge forward to a range of different scenarios.

At Kirkby and Great Broughton School we want to inspire and excite children so that they have a passion for languages. We endeavour to ensure that children build an understanding of how another language works and use this knowledge to explore similarities with their mother tongue. Children will build a sequential knowledge of key words along with knowledge of grammatical structures that they can apply in other contexts. Children will have a rich experience across Key Stage 2 so that they leave our school as life-long language learners.

At KGB we hope to encourage a lifelong love of music by exposing pupils to diverse musical experiences which ignite a passion for music. By listening and responding to different musical styles, finding their voices as singers and performers (using both rhythmic and melodic instruments) and as composers, we will enable them to become reflective musicians as well as help them gain in confidence and self-esteem.

PE Curriculum Intent
PE is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum and an essential contributor to the development of the whole child. Our PE provision will contribute to the personal development, health and well being, enjoyment and achievement of all pupils across the whole curriculum.
Our PE curriculum will promote positive attitudes towards a healthy and active lifestyle, supporting pupils develop personally and socially, working as individuals, in groups and teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility, including leadership, officiating and coaching. Through our PE provision pupils will develop competence and confidence across a broad range of physical and sporting activities.
Through participation in a high quality PE curriculum pupils will discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences and make informed choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.
PE Curriculum Implementation:
Our PE curriculum aims are embedded in our PE lessons and those of the wider curriculum. In PE we plan a programme of activities which build on the children’s prior learning, ensuring children of all abilities have the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding with regard to their physical activity. Our PE provision incorporates progression establishing increasing challenge for the children as they move up through the school.
We will achieve our aims by:
- Providing a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that satisfies the needs of the current National Curriculum and provides pupils with appropriate challenge with acceptable risk.
- Develop a whole school approach to physical development which takes pupils through progressive stages of learning and challenge, enabling them to fulfil their potential, develop competence and control in the gross and fine motor skills that pupils need to take part in PE and sport.
- Educate pupils about, and involve them in, the process of risk management, so that they understand their responsibility in this, in order for them to participate independently in physical activity and to establish good habits and awareness of safety and personal hygiene.
- Ensure pupils have the opportunity to demonstrate that they know and understand how to apply their competence and make appropriate decisions for themselves by challenging pupils to select and use skills, tactics and compositional ideas.
- Provide pupils with opportunities to use imaginative ways to express and communicate ideas, solve problems and overcome challenges, both as individuals and as part of a team or group.
- Ensure pupils understand that PE and sport are an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle and understand the contribution physical activity has on having a healthy body and mind.
- Develop pupils’ stamina, flexibility, strength and the mental capacity (determination and resilience) to keep going, with a focus on personal challenge.
- Develop an environment in which pupils have the confidence to get involved in PE and sport and are committed to make it a central part of their lives both in and out of school.
- Provide an out of school hours programme of activities which extends and enriches curriculum provision and provides opportunity for activities to enable pupils to make sufficient progress to access curriculum sessions with greater success.
- Provide opportunities for competition appropriate to the stage of the individual pupil’s development.
- Ensure that pupils enjoy PE and school sport and establish community links and pathways for pupils to engage in life-long participation.
- Use PE as a tool to develop mental health and well-being.
PE Curriculum Impact:
Children at Kirkby and Great Broughton Primary School will develop a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity, enabling them to make informed choices for a healthy and active future.
The impact of our PE curriculum will be measured through regular assessment and moderation, as well as pupil voice and the number of children taking part in extra-curricular activities. We will continue to promote School Games competitions and encourage our pupils to achieve their best in a wide range of activities.

When children leave Kirkby and Great Broughton that they do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotional capability to be able to play an active, positive and successful role as a global citizen in today’s diverse society. We will provide children with an environment that enables them to feel safe and happy, therefore allowing them to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. Through our PSHE and RSE provision we will prepare children for our ever-changing world with the skills to question situations and make informed decisions. This will enable them to maintain positive mental health and well-being as well as develop and maintain a range of healthy relationships both now and in the future.
We use a range of resources to deliver PSHCE within our school such as SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship PSHE programme, I am, I know, I can and the PSHE Association.
At Kirkby and Great Broughton CE School, we want young people to flourish and to gain every opportunity to live fulfilled lives. RHSE is about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up; healthy relationships within and beyond the family unit; respect for different views and perspectives including those held by different faith and cultural groups; and how to recognise and respond to inappropriate relationships.
In our Church of England school, it is also about the spiritual and moral aspects of relationships within the context of our Christian vision. As such pupils will consider how to ensure that they treat themselves and others, at all times and in all contexts, with dignity and respect. This is encompassed in our vision where we want our children to Sine within themselves, for our community, to the world and light the way for others. (based on Philippians 2: 15-16)
In our school RHSE is delivered by school staff as part of the PSHE curriculum within timetabled PSHE lessons. Some factual aspects of RHSE are a well-established part of the National Curriculum for Science (2014) and will continue to be taught as part of timetabled science lessons.

We want our pupils to leave Kirkby and Great Broughton School as confident, compassionate, and aspirational young people who will make a positive difference to the future world. In RE we want children to shine by challenging their own thinking and that of others, to learn about diversity and challenge stereotypes and open their eyes to the world around them. We intend to take every opportunity to do this.
We plan RE using the York and Leeds Diocese Agreed Syllabus and Understanding Christianity resources. This supports a deeper study into the Christian beliefs covering the 6 core concepts of: God, Creation, Fall, People of God, Incarnation, Gospel, Salvation and Kingdom of God. Through these concepts pupils encounter a range of biblical texts, placed within a wider theological context. Pupils consider the nature of God, Jesus’ life and teachings and the impact on the lives of Christians through exploring different Christian festivals and beliefs. The concepts are explored through making sense of texts, understanding the impact, and making connections.
Throughout their time in school, children also study Judaism (Key Stage 1), and the Islam and Hindu faiths (Key stage 2)
Relationships and Sex Education
Science
Through our science curriculum at Kirkby and Great Broughton School we aim to develop in pupils, curiosity, enjoyment, skills and a growing understanding of science knowledge, through an approach in which pupils raise questions and investigate the world in which they live.

Wisdom of the Woods
Our curriculum is enriched by ‘The Wisdom of the Woods’.
Throughout the year children take part in carefully planned, rewarding and challenging learning experiences designed to enhance, develop and revisit the curriculum in an outside setting.
Children develop their survival skills in a staged, progressive way, working towards a ‘micro adventure’ at the end of their time with Sylvan Lore each year.
Through this, children also build on work in PSHE lessons, covering many of the themes in our PSHE curriculum such as Building relationships, Mental Health, Keeping Safe, Rights and Responsibilities and Being their Best.
Here is what some of our children have said about Wisdom of the Woods:
“I have learnt so many new things like carving, cutting, wood crafting, and keeping warm during cold weathers, making shelters and tying knots. I have also realised that this lesson has also involved many other things that we would learn about in a normal school day like maths because of measuring, art ,science, geography, PSHE and many more.” Poppy

For example geography as we learnt about deforestation, diseases in plants and biodiversity ; science which is also includes biodiversity and we also learnt about different trees like oak, rowen and hazelnut and we have covered art and dt in design where we designed a part to a project we were doing to add to the school area and art where we drew are ideas on paper.
Secondly we learnt different skills including knife work axe work fire lighting and material gathering.
