Welcome to Reception!

In Reception, our Early Years curriculum is designed to be creative, inspiring, challenging and memorable.

We aim to provide opportunities and experiences which will shape, encourage and nurture our children, enabling them to shine brightly within themselves and outwardly to light and lead the way for others.

Embedded in our intent is the desire for our pupils to be exposed to a wide range of first-hand experiences and opportunities which will broaden their understanding of the world around them and equip them with the skills and attitudes needed to be successful confident life-long learners.

We deliver our programme of learning through three broad enquiry questions;

 I wonder what is special. (Autumn Term)

I wonder how things change. (Spring Term)

I wonder what happens next. (Summer Term)

Our week is organised into themed days.
Monday – ‘Investigate’
Using a curiosity approach to introduce the weeks learning and inspire critical thinking we aim to provide the children with exciting, open ended objects or experiences the they can ask questions about and explore through their senses. This links to key concepts in Literacy and Maths and provides cross curricular links to Understanding the World (primarily History, Re and Computing aspects).
Tuesday – ‘Wonder’
Each week we will plan a ‘Wonder Walk’ in and around the school grounds, focussing on observation of the world around us and inspiring questions and exploration. This links to key concepts in Literacy and Maths and provides cross curricular links to Understanding the World (primarily Science and Geography aspects).
Wednesday – ‘Move’
Our ‘move’ theme incorporates both fine and gross motor skills. We use aspects of ‘squiggle while you wiggle’, ‘dough disco’ and finger gym activities to strengthen muscles for writing and coordination. Gross motor sessions include outdoor play using a range of large and small equipment to increase balance, coordination and games skills, PE lessons, music and dance and discrete handwriting sessions.
Thursday – ‘Create’
This theme uses a ‘Plan, do, review’ approach to inspire children to have their own ideas and be able to plan and carry out these ideas in their own way, beginning to review the process once they have finished. Children will engage in activities using a range of resources that can be modified or manipulated. The ‘create’ theme primarily links to Art and Expressive Design (DT, Art and Music).
Friday – ‘Friendship’
This theme celebrates and nurtures relationships within the class and across our Early Years setting – bringing our reception and nursery children together for a segment of the day. We see the potential in mixed age and ability learning, especially for aspects of the curriculum such as PSED. These sessions are carefully structured to take into account the lines of enquiry that week and nursery and reception children will work together. Staff interact with all ages and stages to move the learning forward.
