What is the Sports Premium?
The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15 to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of Funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:
- Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
- New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
- Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
- Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
- Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs
Our Sport Premium Strategy
Our Vision is that ALL pupils leaving Kirkby and Great Broughton Church of England Primary school will be physically literate and have the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. Each year, every child in our school will be given the opportunity to represent the school in a sports event or competition.
Our overall objective is to achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools against these five key indicators:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.
- The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
- Increased participation in competitive sport.
The Sports Premium continued to be used to employ specialist Sports coaches. All pupils benefit from specialised PE coaching whilst teachers and teaching assistants gain valuable CPD by team-teaching and observing PE Lessons. This year we have welcomed accredited coaches within the specialism of football and tennis to coach our pupils and provide quality CPD to staff. Our sports coaches also run after-school sports club each week in school and a lunchtime club aimed at engaging and developing girls’ football was also provided.
Membership of a Cluster Sports Partnership is funded through the premium; this provides excellent opportunities for competitive sport and we are delighted that a number of our children have, as a result of these opportunities, qualified for Hambleton Area finals during the year.
Pupils from across the school benefit from a wide range of sporting opportunities organised and hosted by the Stokesley Cluster Co-ordinator. Our children have attended Cross country level 2 & 3 events, KS1 & FS multi-sports, Netball, Football and Tag Rugby tournaments & festivals.
In August 2019, we were delighted to be awarded the Bronze School Games Mark, recognising our children’s participation in sport.
A Fitness Footpath, installed around the main field, provides an all-weather track for running activities encouraging pupils to achieve a daily mile/15 minutes of activity. This facility has been very well received and utilised by the pupils. Plans to further enhance this facility are ongoing with the continued development of our outdoor space to include various fitness/activity stations for the children to use as part of their PE curriculum and for increased activity at play-times.
